SES Solid State Data Recorder - Fascia Mounted Plus
The S3DR product family is a low cost, high performance, rugged solution to the data recording and processing needs of environmentally challenging embedded systems, such as those found in aerospace, defence, naval and safety-related industrial applications.

S3DR-F+ (Fascia mounted plus) is a specialisation of the generic product family, providing multiple, optional interface capabilities, while retaining minimum size and mass, operator front panel control and access to removable memory medium from within a cockpit. Interface options are extensive, and can include, for example, 2 channels of video with 4 channels of audio or 2 channels of Mil-Std 1553B. Solid state memory cards are available in many sizes up to 2 x 16GB in PCMCIA flash format, or more in rugged cartridge format.
The unit features a high-speed recording function that is able to write data to one or two removable memory modules continuously at up to 160Mbps. Processing functions are provided by an Intel compatible processor, allowing application specific data gathering regimes to be implemented, and the Active Front Panel allows substantial user interaction and monitoring of the recording.

The S3DR-F+ is complemented by the REVEAL data retrieval application - also available from SES - allowing synchronous display and analysis of the multiple recorded data streams.

SES Solid State Data Recorder - Fascia Mounted Plus: Interfaces
The S3DR-F+ has been designed to support ready customisation. The standard interfaces supported by the S3DR-F+ are:
- 2x RS422/485/232 Full Duplex Asynchronous Interface
- 2x Synchronous Serial I/O (NRZ and clock) RS422 or IRIG106 PCM
- 1x 10/100 Mbit Ethernet
- 3x Discrete Inputs (alternative I/O by request)
- 1x Discrete Output
- 1x IRIG B Timecode Input or IRIG B Output
- 4x ARINC 429 Rx
These standard inputs are enabled/ disabled in accordance with customers specific requirements and connector pin-out requirements. In addition the product can be expanded through the addition of one of the following optional interfaces:
- 2x MPEG2 Encoded Video Channels with 4x Audio Channels
- 2x Mil Std 1553B
The S3DR-F+ software can be customised to meet your needs, for example to start and stop recording based on a particular pattern in a data stream, or to communicate with the remote system to obtain the data to be recorded. S3DR-F+ can be configured to be controlled using the remote control protocol defined in Chapter 6 of IRIG106-05.
SES Solid State Data Recorder - Fascia Mounted Plus: Memory
S3DR-F+ utilises high speed, high capacity PCMCIA ATA flash memory, providing low-cost removable media, with the added advantage that they can be read using a standard laptop, or a special high-speed reader.
- Solid State Removable Memory Module

SES has qualified a number of extended performance PCMCIA ATA flash memory cards which can be used with S3DR-F+, but the recommended solution is to use SES own design of solid state memory cards, which have extended environmental performance and functionality, providing optimal performance when used with an SES recorder. The S3DR-F+ data recorder uses one or two Memory Cards, doubling the available storage capacity.
SES solid state memory cards are available in the following capacities 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 6GB, 8GB and 16GB. All SES solid state memory cards are environmentally enhanced to achieve exceptional environmental performance:
- Performance:
- Data Transfer Rates: Sustained read/write rate: up to 80 MBit/s per second.
- Enhanced Functionality (Optional):
- Sanitise (Secure) Erase of all data on media using DoD approved algorithms
- Purge (Destructive) Erase of media.
- Data security (blocking unauthorised access)
- Reliability:
- MTBF: >1,000,000 power-on hours.
- Error Rate: less than 1 bit in error in 1014bits read.
- ECC: High reliability based on internal Error Correcting Code function.
- Ruggedness:
- Shock, operating or non-operating: 2000G, any axis or direction.
- Vibration, operating or non-operating: 30G peak to peak (sine), 10-2000Hz, any axis or direction, 14G (random)
- Temperature: -40ºC to 85ºC (operating), -40°C to 85°C (non operating)

SES Multi-Channel Video and Data Recorder: Support
SES provide a number of optional support items to maximise the potential of the S3DR-MVDR platform, including:

REVEAL is a partner product to the S3DR-MVDR data recorder. It allows the user to extract and manipulate data from a removable memory cartridge and prepare the cartridge for reuse by the S3DR-MVDR. REVEAL is an application for Microsoft Windows that provides a wealth of features for extracting, interpreting, visualising and analysing data captured using an SES data recorder. Key features of the tool include:
- Convert data to a variety of formats to allow analysis with domain specific tools
- Interpret data to demultiplex or decommutate a data stream into its constituent parameters
- Archive data to hard disk, CD or DVD for later analysis or long term storage
- Visualisation of data to allow visual analysis within REVEAL using a framework that supports real-time and fast-time playback where suitable hardware is available
- Declassification of S3DR data storage media
- Annotation of recorded data with supplementary data, for example Form 725
The architecture of the application allows for easy customisation of the application to suit bespoke requirements, for example introduction of a new component to output data in a new format. Alternatively, the underlying components can be reused to provide a bespoke application to automate the extraction and processing of S3DR data cartridges.
